I’ve got things to do. I’ve got cleaning to do, dishes, laundry, writing, lunch packing, and (hopefully) some sleeping. Am I doing any of those things? Nope. I’m watching a giraffe breathe. And I’m not the only one.
No, wait! She’s up! Ok, still no baby…
I ignored the whole thing for a few days. I don’t have a problem with giraffes, but I really couldn’t find the appeal in watching one have a baby.
Wait, wait…she’s doing something weird with her leg. False alarm.
I mean, I’ve had a baby. I’ve watched dogs and cats have babies. It’s a miracle and every new life is a gift. Baby animals are, for the most part, completely adorable. I just didn’t understand what the big deal was about April.
SN: “Precious Puppies” is currently on Netflix. It’s very cute, but a little bit of warning that we were getting ready to witness a live birth would have been great. Then I could have maybe been better prepared for the very valid stream of questions I got, including, “Did she just poop her baby?” and “Why is she eating poop off the puppies?”
Anyway, I decided yesterday to see just what was so special about this particular giraffe and her baby. I thought maybe…ok, I honestly couldn’t think of any reason why this had become such a thing. Giraffes are an endangered species, but it’s not like this is the last giraffe in the world and the fate of the entire species lies within her poor stretched out uterus.
Ok, she’s doing something weird with her neck. I don’t think this has anything to do with the baby, but she just kind of folded her neck back on itself and it was crazy looking. That’s all.
Literally, millions of viewers around the world have tuned in to watch April lie down, chew cud, walk around in circles, and poop. The reason for everyone’s interest? The live streaming of this very pregnant giraffe was flagged by animal activists for “nudity and sexual content” and removed from YouTube. Therefore, a fuss was made and the world wanted to see.
As of tonight, February 28, 2017, April has been doing a lot of tail swishing and her calf has been doing a lot of “lemme outa here” moves in utero. As this has been allegedly going on for days now, I don’t know why I get a little belly flip of my own whenever I see what I think is unusual behavior. However, I have absolutely no idea what actually constitutes unusual behavior for a giraffe.
All I can say for sure is that she’s a lovely animal! Even in a confined enclosure and having been pregnant for over a year (can you imagine?!?), she’s still somehow elegant. Not to mention her eyelashes, which are to die for.
So now we wait. I’m torn between staying awake to keep watching or going to sleep like a normal person because life is going to happen tomorrow whether I get enough sleep or not. I’m going to be SO mad if Ashton Kutcher runs onscreen and lets us know we’ve all been Punk’d.
