What do you get the woman that has everything and really wants nothing? I LOVE my mother-in-law (and I’m not sipping the egg nog when I write that!) But this woman, though appreciates every gift, is the hardest for me to buy for at Christmas! I always want to make things special for each gift I give but I always feel like I can’t get a gift good enough to represent how thankful I am to have married her little boy! She did a great job raising him and helping shape my husband into the best man and father….How do you find a gift that says all that without being too mushy at Christmas?
Well, I might have looked at a couple of these options….I don’t think my MIL reads my blog, but just in case, I will write out some of the things I would like if I was a MIL:
- Coffee’s or Teas
A nice coffee mug along with either a Starbucks gift card or even some ground coffee. A pretty gift – whole coffee beans in a Mason jar or glass seal-able jar tied with a ribbon.
Also, there are many different teas out there today that your MIL might like to try. My favorite store is “Bingley’s Teas” – Yes…Austen inspired!

That brings me to another gift idea:
Does your MIL like to read? Find out what her favorite author or genre is and look for either the latest release or go to Ebay and look for early editions. One year I looked at what Nancy Drew novels my mother in law was missing in her collection and was able to find them fairly cheap on Amazon – (with Prime you get free 2 day shipping on most items too!) Short on time? Check out your local Goodwill Stores or Antique shops.
Again, working with things she may be sentimental about , Look into adding something unique to her collection
Does she have a favorite TV show? Era of music? Food? Today you can find ornaments or even items to add to a Christmas village in just about every area!
- Family Tree
If you have enough information you can create a family tree using Ancestry.com. Target has some tree wall decals or pictures you can use and hand type or print out to put on the tree. Even just a family tree diagram framed might be nice! Check out Pinterest or do a websearch for a free template!
- Remember – she is still a girl!
Just because your Mother in Law is older than you, inside she is still a girl – a young woman –
Maybe create a gift basket full with a duel picture frame of her and your father in law when they were younger, add in some of her favorite candy, a novel, and bath products.
Is she close to her parents? Maybe find some old pictures of them as well.
In the end, I guess if I remember my own last tip, it really isnt too hard to find or come up with something. There is always the old stand by of a nice sweater or a gift set, but if you want to put a little more of a personal touch to the gift, you might want to add a little touch of your own.
I hope this helps get your ideas flowing! If you have any other tips let me know….I may need them for next year!
